DAYTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY
July 31, 2001

The previous meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was held on Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at 6:35 PM with nine people in attendance.  The secretary’s and treasurer’s report were read and accepted.

Andy read a detailed estimate on rewiring the building as presented by Phil Hussey.  The total amount quoted is $2800.00 if the wiring goes underground, $2300.00 if the wiring is above ground.  Andy has also spoken to Selectman Ed LeBlanc about lining up someone to roof the building after the foundation is repaired.

Nancy is gathering information of calendars as a possible future fund-raiser.  Members were encouraged to start bringing in old photos that can be scanned or copied for both archives and calendars.  Karen presented information on T-shirts as another possible fund-raiser.  Both will be discussed in more detail at this meeting.  Virginia Proctor suggested that we consider holding a bake sale during town elections to raise additional funds and promote awareness of the Society.

We also discussed certificates for honorary memberships to be given to former teachers of all the Dayton schoolhouses.  To find teachers’ names it will be necessary to go through old town reports.  Former teacher Pauline Meserve has many years’ worth of old reports that she would like to donate to the Society once we have a place to keep them.  We decided that when accepting donations of items we would try to keep them at the school as much as possible.

A work meeting was planned for August 8th to clean up the grounds around the schoolhouse.  Another yard sale was planned for August 25th: this raised $164.50.

We have received two large donations recently.  At the last meeting Andy presented a check for $500.00 from Isolde Cole in the name of Gordon Cole.  At the yard sale the Society received a check from Fred and Carol Gay in the amount of $1000.00.  Thank you notes were sent to Isolde and Fred this week.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Valerie Cole
