Dayton Historical Society
September 25, 2001

The September meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was held at 7pm on the 25th at Harris Farm Ski Hut with 15 people in attendance.  The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and accepted: at that time there was $2423.95 in the checking account.
Under old business, Andy reported that roofer Mike Roberge was preparing to start on the Franklin Schoolhouse roof during the second week of October.
The Society discussed the possibility of having a camera ready-image made of the town seal that could be used on tee shirts.  Virginia Proctor agreed to look around at the town hall for a clear image that could be used to produce this.
Karen and Nancy are trying to obtain information on having calendars made up as a future fund-raiser.  Potential calendar photos were discussed: among these were the local churches and the Mill building, the dam, Franklin and Union schools, Clark’s Mills, Cole Farm barn, fire stations and fire trucks, and Gene Meserve’s house, which is the oldest in Dayton.  Virginia Gay has copies of three photos with names of the students and would like to find the originals for possible calendar pages.  Andy agreed to check his aunt’s belongings for old photos.
Under new business, the Society discussed how to preserve donations of items.  Virginia Gay has height and weight charts and registers that need to be carefully preserved.  The Bowdoins reported that they had recently visited the Scarborough Historical Society’s new annex and that perhaps we could talk with that group about methods they are using to preserve items.  Clark offered to visit the place also to gather information.  The Bowdoins also offered to make a video tape of Virginia Gay’s memories of teaching in the Franklin School.
The Society also discussed straightening the flagpole, purchasing a flag for the school, and having a plaque made to commemorate the building’s use by the American Legion.  Lorraine Bowdoin expressed an interest in the American Legion sign and it was decided that she should have it, as the building was dedicated in part to her cousin who was killed in action.
Lucy Leonard reported that school records were available to view by reservation at the Saco Library and offered to look through them for any helpful information.
        The meeting adjourned at 8:10.
