DAYTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY
February 12, 2002
The combined January and February meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was held on February 12th at 7:10 PM at the Harris Farm Ski Hut. Ten members were in attendance. The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and accepted. The checking account contained a balance of $1114.86. Proceeds from the sweater raffle in December were $108.00.
Under old business, Andy reported that he had talked with someone at a non-profit salvage agency about windows to replace those in the schoolhouse. After discussion we decided that the best choice for replacements would be six-over-six, double-paned, wood framed windows.
Andy also talked with neighbor Jesse Philbrick and asked him if we could park on his property. Jesse indicated that this would be okay. Andy also asked Jesse to dig a trench for the incoming electric wire, and Jesse did this for us at no charge.
Under new business, we decided to come up with a long-range plan and a solicitation letter to mail to local businesses to generate funds and help acquire materials that we need for renovation. Cynthia and Valerie agreed to work on this letter.
Jon Coniaris volunteered to look into getting a new flagpole from the Maine Turnpike Authority for the front of the school. The MTA has been giving away aluminum flagpoles to communities that have been affected in some way by the turnpike widening.
We also discussed whether or not we should ask the selectmen to have a culvert placed in the ditch, which could then be covered and would provide a wider shoulder for parking. Andy volunteered to talk with the selectmen about this matter.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 PM. Next meeting date is March 26, 2002.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Cole, Secretary
