DAYTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY
JULY 30, 2002
The July meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was held on the thirtieth at the Franklin Schoolhouse, with 11 members and one visitor in attendance. President Andy Cole called the meeting to order at 6:45 PM.
The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and accepted. The bank account contained $2855.90.
Under old business, the Society decided to look into purchasing a flagpole and the necessary hardware, as it would cost nearly $150 to outfit the donated pole and make it operational.
Andy reported that Paul Poirier, a building mover in Saco, has quoted $4700.00 to raise the school and put it back down after foundation work has been completed. Members discussed options for the foundation work and Andy agreed to contact Kevin Tanguay for suggestions on whether the foundation should consist of a slab or a wall. Rusty Keen of Dayton Sand and Gravel has agreed to donate the concrete.
The Dayton Town Seal is currently being redrawn by Alden Cole and should be available soon for use on T-shirts and other items.
Members who participated in the July 9th work night accomplished a lot of groundwork; they mowed, filled in the hole by the right front corner, and re-seeded the bald area.
It was suggested that next year we submit a warrant or article to the town to ask for more funds for repairing the schoolhouse.
Under new business, dues were collected from those members present. Visitor Beth Duggan offered to create a website for the Franklin School in lieu of dues.
The 2001 slate of officers was re-elected for the current year and positions are as follows: President, Andy Cole; Vice-president, Bill Harris; Secretary, Valerie Cole; Treasurer, Virginia Proctor; Historian, Jerry Guiney; and Membership, Nancy Welch.
The next meeting is slated for Tuesday, August 27th, 6:30 PM at the Franklin School.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Cole
