Dayton Historical Society
March 25, 2003
The March meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was held on the 25th at 6:35 PM at Harris Farm Ski Hut with 11 members present. The Secretary’s report was read and accepted. There was no Treasurer’s report.
Under old business, Alan Mullet reported that there is no schoolhouse furniture in the Town Garage. No estimate has been received yet from Jeremy Berube for repairing the school’s foundation and John Gay agreed to contact him.
Andy Cole reported that he has received a cane from Mr. Ferland that will be presented to Dayton’s oldest citizen at Town Meeting. Andy has also presented articles to the town selectmen on two separate occasions requesting funds for the Franklin School and for planning events for the Town’s sesquicentennial. These articles now go before the Budget committee.
Under new business, members discussed possible events for the sesquicentennial. Some of the suggested ideas included inviting groups such antique tractor clubs, inviting local churches and other community groups to participate, holding a parade, a chicken BBQ, displaying historical memorabilia, and showing a film taken during the Town’s Centennial celebration. Clark Cole will hopefully be present at the April meeting to show us the film.
Nancy has been talking with the Hutchinsons from Waterboro about taking care of old cemeteries and will invite them to the April meeting to speak.
Cynthia Bradish reported that her husband Terry was forming a parade unit depicting the early Revolutionary War period and that interested people are welcome to join.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 and the next meeting was scheduled for April 29th at Harris Farm.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie J Cole
