DAYTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY
April 29, 2003
The April 29th meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was called to order by President Andy Cole at 6:45 PM, with ten members and two guests present. The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and accepted, with a balance of $3220.69 in the checking account.
Under old business, Andy displayed the cane that he acquired to present to Dayton’s oldest citizen at Town Meeting. At present, Charlotte Cole is believed to be the oldest resident. The Society will order a plaque from Sportline Trophy to mount on the cane.
Terry Bradish talked about the Revolutionary War era parade unit that he is forming, and will bring us more information for the next meeting.
John Gay reported that he called Jeremy Berube about providing us with an estimate for repairing the foundation under the schoolhouse, and hopes to have more to report at the next meeting.
Nancy Welch reported that David Hill has expressed an interest in helping us with the schoolhouse; we just need to ask him. She also reported that Jim Roberts has put an article before the Selectmen to request help in finding old cemeteries in town.
Andy reported that he has talked with painter Ladd Huff about working on the building’s exterior and has asked for a quote. Ladd would agree to let us do some of the work ourselves, such as scraping.
Following old business we had an enjoyable presentation by guests Edie and Al Hutchinson on cleaning up old cemeteries and repairing and preserving tombstones.
The meeting adjourned at 7:40, and the next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, May 27th, at Harris Farm.
Respectfully submitted,
Valerie Cole, Secretary
