Dayton Historical Society
July 27, 2004
ADMINISTRATIVE:
The July 27th meeting of the Dayton Historical Society was called to order by President Andy Cole at 6:40 PM at the Harris Farm Ski Hut. Eighteen people were in attendance. The Secretary’s report was read and accepted. The Treasurer sent a report indicating that the current checking account balance is approximately $6600.00. Virginia also indicated that the Historical Society still had $5000.00 to collect from the town towards renovating the Franklin Schoolhouse and another $500.00 coming to help offset the cost of the Sesquicentennial.
OLD BUSINESS:
On behalf of the members of the Historical Society, Andy presented Leo Goodwin with a Certificate of Appreciation and a gold town coin in a blue velvet case for his hard work and dedication in putting together the Sesquicentennial Parade.
The parade and Field Day held on July 10th were a success and very well attended and members had many favorable comments to relay. Many photos were handed around during the meeting, showing parade entries and festivities that took place during the day. Phyllis Woodworth donated her photos to the Society, as did Nancy Welch and Valerie Cole. Photos will be held at the Coles’ house for the time being.
Andy indicated that he intends to ask the Selectmen if the Town will pay half of the advertising bill ($450.00) for the parade. The other half will be paid by the Historical Society. He also intends to order more hard cases for the commemorative coins and more T-shirts to fill orders.
Members came up with a list of businesses that made donations to the celebration. The secretary will send out thank you notes to the following:
Merriam-Graves, helium
Poland Springs, water
A1, portable toilets
Bruce Monroe, video
WalMart, donation of goods
Hannaford, donation of goods
Saco Shaws, donation of goods
Biddeford Shaws, donation
The Waycott family, use of wagon for judges’ stand
Jeremy Berube has completed repairs on two sides of the Franklin Schoolhouse foundation and has offered to place granite facing around the bathrooms as well. John Coniaris has done some maintenance work around the building as well.
Jerry Guiney suggested that members could visit some of the older houses in town during the winter and volunteered his house as one of the places. He and Dixie Harris came up with the names of several homes.
The idea of creating a calendar as a fund-raiser was brought up, members talked about different ideas for photos. One was to use photos of old houses such as were on display on July 10th. Another was to use photos taken that day of the parade and Field Day events. The Secretary will look into companies that print calendars.
NEW BUSINESS:
Election of officers was held; Amos Gay made a motion that the Secretary cast one ballot for the current slate of officers and Dixie seconded the motion. Officers are as follows:
President: Andy Cole
Vice President: Bill Harris
Secretary: Valerie Cole
Treasurer: Virginia Proctor
Historian: Jerry Guiney
Membership: Nancy Welch
Publicity: John Coniaris
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 31st at 6:00 and will be a potluck cookout at the home of Andy and Valerie Cole. Meeting adjourned at 7:15 PM; members watched a video of the parade taken by Andy Welch.
Respectfully submitted,
